Whether it’s accidentally sleeping with makeup on a little too often, treating sugar as its own food group, or everything in between, breakouts happen to even the best of us. It’s important to be mindful of not only what you’re putting into your body (drink more water!), but also what type of products you put on your skin. Challenge yourself to create an effective skincare regime and stick to it every morning and night.

The Skincare Basics
Build your skincare arsenal with these five basics:

Cleanser – Clean skin is the pathway to great skin. Find a good cleanser (or two) and cleanse your face every morning and night. Mild cleansers are great for normal and combination skin while rich, creamy formulas are better for dry skin. If your skin is exceptionally dry, cleanse only at night and splash your face with warm water in the morning. For oily skin, deep cleanse morning and night using a cleanser of your choice with a power tool to keep those pores clear!

Toners – Balance your skin and rid your face of any impurities your cleanser might have left behind. Most toners are created with specific active ingredients that work with any skin type but if you want something more targeted, you should look into specific ingredients for your skin worry. For example, different plant extracts and essential oils are all generally good for your skin but some can have different uses. If you have oily skin, find a toner that has witch hazel and lactic acid because of its mattifying benefits. For dry skin, look for alcohol-free tones with soothing ingredients like rosewater.

Serum – Serums can be a bit underrated but its light and usually water-based formula absorbs easily into the skin, meaning the other products you apply may be more effective. There are many different types of serums available, including brightening and hydrating. Choose the one that best fits your needs.

Moisturizer – Properly moisturizing means plump and glowing skin. Even if you have oily skin, don’t skip this step! Opt for an oil-free or gel-based moisturizer instead. For dry skin, find something heavier and creamier.

SPF – Applying SPF every morning is arguably the most important step in your skincare regime. Apply liberally after moisturizer and before makeup to protect your skin from the sun!

Treat Yourself
Confident in your current skin routine? Here are some add-ons that can make your routine extra well-rounded:

Eye cream – The skin under your eyes is extremely delicate which means it’s more susceptible to wrinkles and drooping with time. Apply product gently with your ring finger, the weakest finger. If you think you’re too young for eye cream, look at it like SPF — a product meant for prevention and protection. Your future self will thank you!

Face masks – Whether you prefer sheet masks or clay masks, treat your skin by taking the time for a face masks every now and then. Don't forget to find masks that target your specific skin needs.
